The main objective of Metropolitano de Lisboa consists in thoroughly accomplishing the mission that is laid down in its articles of association and which can be translated in the following terms: The operation of a collective rail transport network in situ proprio, mainly underground, in the city of Lisbon and peripheral areas, as well as the execution of all activities related to the modernization and expansion of the network with a view to the specific purpose of the means of transport, not only in the context of the city but also in the multimodal transport system of which it is a nuclear component. In this context it is the responsibility of Metropolitano de Lisboa: To operate its network with the highest possible standards of safety, regularity and profitability; To remodel, expand and modernize the old stations, increasing their functionality and attractiveness and guaranteeing safety of persons and goods; To execute on schedule the successive phases of the network expansion works; To ensure the maintenance and modernization of the rolling stock, which is necessary to maintain the high safety standards and the transport offer in the network accordingly with the successive phases of its expansion; To contribute to the creation of a truly intermodal system of transport operators in the Greater Lisbon area.
