O GAIA é uma associação ecologista, inovadora, plural, apartidária e não hierárquica. Foi fundada em 1996 em Lisboa e actua a nível nacional e regional com núcleos em Lisboa, no Porto e no Alentejo. Colabora com outras associações portuguesas e faz parte de várias redes europeias. O GAIA é uma organização não-governamental do ambiente com uma forte componente activista, recorrendo a acções directas, criativas e não-violentas, promovendo o trabalho a partir das bases. Aborda a problemática ecológica através de uma crítica ao modelo social e económico que explora e prejudica o planeta, a sociedade e as gerações futuras. Paralelamente, procura construir alternativas positivas para um mundo ecologicamente sustentável e socialmente justo. -- GAIA is a Portuguese environmental NGO founded in 1996. It is active both at the national and regional levels, with nodes in Lisbon, Porto and the Alentejo. GAIA cooperates with other Portuguese associations and takes active part in many national and European networks. GAIA's modus operandi is pluralist and non-hierarchical, with a strong activist component. We use creative, non-violent direct actions and grassroots projects to create awareness for our causes. We believe ecological problems are intimately linked to the current social and economical model, which exploits and harms our planet, society and future generations. At the same time, we explore positive alternatives for a world based on social justice and ecological sustainability.
