Came across this gem on my walk around the city of Coimbra. Out of the way, unassuming with only a name that stands out. This is a local hangout, good food at a reasonable price. Seems to be always busy, a dive with a twist, has to be tried to be believed. The 'Bifana' is superb, the omelette in bread simple and tasty. The hot sauce is exactly that, hot but tasty. Come is, ask for a half of red, order a 'Bifana' and an omelette in bread and enjoy. I know I did

Over a discrete corner door is the sign with the name Mijacão in metallic letters. It is hidden between the alleys of downtown Coimbra, unnoticed from the tourist route. It is a typical restaurant in town, by many titled as the best bifana of Coimbra. It has a cheerful and informal atmosphere that offers a quick snack to quench the hunger of locals. Very busy at lunch time. It has a very good kitchen, but I recommend you go to the counter to have a look at the filling options of the sandwiches. It would be a shame not to try them. Order it there or at a table. You can choose between “iscas” (thin slices of liver of fried cattle), “moela” (chicken gizzards with sauce), “carapau frito” (fried mackerel) and of course “bifana” (“febra” sandwich: thin slices of pork cooked in garlic and wine). To the adepts, there is the spicy sauce of the house called “barba rija” (hard beard).
