Please note that the Leiria castle is a very nice momument with pretty features, like the destroyed church and the balcony facing Leiria. However, the castle is under renovation up until 2021, probably the end of the year.

Great example of a Moorish castle. One of several that we visited while in Portugal. Fairly well preserved and worth the visit
Let your imagination explore the fantasy of your best medieval life. Great historical monuments in ruins. This places really makes you feel like in a fairytale.
This castle is not one of the biggest castles around. But it does have some beautiful old buildings. The old church building is awe inspiring. I have to admit it is not the easiest to get around. There some steep hills and I did find that my legs began to burn walking up some of the hills. The views from the top of the castle walls of the surrounding city are breath taking. It is no entry fee so its great if you are on a budget
I stay in hotel at front of castle a amazing place
Have spent there 2 hours exploring every stone. Marvelous peace of Portuguese history. Worth every minute spent there. Don't miss the church below. Managed to participate in mass on sunday 12:00 local. Portuguese was difficult to understand, but its is the same in any language, so I did it in mine. :)
Amazing medieval castle in the hill of Leiria. The gothic church dated back in 1135 is simply stunning to see and feel it's vibrance. The view, the rooms with the displayed furniture gets you back in time in just a heartbeat. I explored every single inch of the place on a Tuesday morning with not a single soul around. I would advise you to try and see everything. Get on the top of the castle, enjoy the view, feel how it might be like to live back in another time and place. Nice additions are the armour displays and swords in the castle's tower. Simply a must do in Leiria!
