Such a gloriously strange and wonderful place. The visit was like taking a walk through a surrealist painting. Definitely worth bringing along a waterproof, if you're familiar with Sintra you'll already know but if its your first time worth knowing that the clouds often cover the area making it chilly and damp. Exciting place for keen photographers with crazy architecture and even some underground lakes. Packed full of history and intrigue, worth reading up about the sites dark and interesting history before you visit.

Initiation Wells Located in Sintra, Portugal. The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire consists of a palace and chapel with exquisite décor including frescoes, stained glass windows, and lavish stuccoes. The grounds feature lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and an extensive and enigmatic system of tunnels that connect to two spiraling wells. The pair of wells, known as the ‘Initiation Wells’ consist of ‘winding stair’ architecture, which carries symbolic meaning including the death/rebirth allegory common to many hermetic traditions. The wells were never used to collect water. Instead, they were part of a mysterious initiation ritual within the Knights of Templar tradition.

Definitely worth the 10 entrance fee - so much to see there! We loved that it has so much to offer. Our personal highlight: the Poço Iniciático where you can follow the downwards spiral, go through some caves and basically walk though half of the park underground. Even though there are quite a lot of tourists, you have a chilled vibe as the whole garden is spacious.

What an awesome place to visit. Quite fascinating to wander through the immense garden, see the many limestone grottos, the well and have a glimpse of the lifestyle that the family had.

Beautiful park you should visit when you are in sintra. 10 Euro entry fee. A lot of nice pictures. I visit that park at the end of the day with beautiful light.
