What a beautiful station! with a superb and stunning hall with blue Portuguese ceramic tiles. São Bento is Porto's central station, completed in 1916 and it is built on the site of a 16th century Benedictine monastery - from which the name São Bento is derived. Free to visit and enjoy the “ artwork “ and history of the station. These azulejo masterpieces consist of around 20 thousand tiles and depict a range of historic events along with scenes of Portuguese life and the history of transport. They are the work of Jorge Colaço, the most eminent azulejo painter of the day. He spent over 10 years painting the epic scenes. There's a fresh fruit stall near the train platform that sells freshly squeezed orange juice too.

Beautiful entrance. It is supposed that Harry potters first story was inspired in this local. Later they decided to look something similar in London and found london kings cross as the main platform for the movie. Entrance here is free and worth to enter. I was actually looking for a toilet to use and you can use it paying 0.50 cents (no cards accepted but there are 2 ATMs). Looking forward to come back to use the trains to travel around this amazing north region.
São Bento Station - This is a highly recommended point of interest even though you are not catching a train here. Enter into the hall is surrounded by the stunning art of blue tile walls. Many people came here just for a picture of this art. Amazing.

This is really a gorgeous place with many beautiful “tile paintings” - very truly portugués style. It is very recommendable to go and check it out as it is very central and close to many other landmarks.

Free to visit and enjoy the “ artwork “ and history of the station. Can get very busy when it’s raining as it gives the many tourist groups somewhere to dry off for a short while. It could do with more seating but I suspect this is to stop people clogging up the limited space.the station is ideal for onward travel to Lisbon and the Alvarez ( 3 hrs and about 5 respectively) cleanliness is on a par with most EU Cities. Staff very helpful behind the counter in ticket office.
