Europe has a long history of science and innovation. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in European economic competitiveness and regional economic growth. In turbulent times, however, they increasingly rely on their hidden innovation capacities and new, more flexible business models to adapt and survive. In a complex and dynamic market environment "many SMEs need to better understand the value of intangibles yet have no practical tools to assess and develop their know–how," says Thorsten Roser, LRCG director and coordinator of the InCaS financial markets community. "SMEs need to systematically communicate how they leverage and re-create Intellectual Capital if they want to grow and be attractive to investors." In the EU funded project ‘Intellectual Capital Statement Made in Europe (InCaS)’ a group of leading business development experts from the LSE, Fraunhofer and UPC have developed the first European approach for the valuation of Intellectual Capital (IC) of SMEs: Leveraging Innovation with the Intellectual Capital Statement (ICS). The ICS methodology is an approach to assess and re-create know-how by describing and evaluating the intangible assets of the firm.
