Some will say why give a 5 star review when getting skunked fishing? I went fishing with Capt. Les Gallagher out of Horta on the Brasilia. We got skunked two days. We saw no fish off of our stern, but saw one Marlin landed off of one of the five other boats in the fleet. It was a slow two days with 4 marlin seen. Fish ranged from 400lb to 700lb with average closer to the upper end. Thus, the fish are big, but limited in numbers in August. The best portion of the Season is Sept thru October, with the first Marlin showing in July. That said, Les is by far one of the most knowledgeable individuals about the waters of the Azores and it's Marlin Fishery. He also has experience big game fishing off of the Cape Verde Islands and Ascension Island. I didn’t get to see him in action, but from the conversation I had he has a deep knowledge on what conditions make for good Azorean fishing, techniques of handling and landing large fish, which is an art in self. I will note I say this after fishing off of Cohiba Island and with Tropic Star in Panama, amongst numerous trips off NC Outer Banks. He is pleasurable and humble captain, think a combo of Quint and Matt Hooper from Jaws with an Irish accent. Those that go Marlin fishing understand the ebbs and flows of fishing. I will add Les is talented marine artist and his family has started a great bar across the street from the Fort in Horte. I suspect in decades to come he will be remembered as the Guy Harvey of the Azores and in my opinion should be held in a similar light in terms of his depth of knowledge and talent. His art work and educational material can be found in an adjoining store to the bar.
