If you are walking, either path from the old town up to this fortaleza is a bit tedious through narrow streets with traffic and no sidewalks (at times). You will be rewarded with nice views and a small exhibition around the history of the castle. The cafe inside the fortaleza is currently closed but the one on the north side (you will have to walk around the castle to get there) is open and beautiful.

Great view over Funchal. Nicely renovated and some excellent paintings of Funchal in the early days with some an excellent explanation of the history of the fort.

Fortress overlooking Funchal. Public and free access, with a nice coffeeshop inside.

Great views of Funchal from this vantage point. Admission is free. Amenities are available. There is also a mini museum giving historical references, pictures and maps. A coffee shop is on site.

A steep walk on foot but well worth a visit for the views

A fortress in the middle of Funchal. Nice views to both sides of the hill. The fortress is small and to walk around it on the outside you need to enter from a different way then if you want to visit it inside. Outside there's also a small car park that's useful. It's another thing yo see in Madeira. Beware that on Sundays, Mondays and holiday's it's closed the inside.
