I hate their restaurant. Overcooked frozen food. Bad service. Really bad experience and so expensive (yesterday i’ve been in Belmond hotel and it Was cheaper)

If there's one thing the Casa Velha Do Palheiro has, is a true British charm. In fact, the hotel lives at a British pace: tea time between 4pm and 6pm, bridge and snooker/pool sessions, dinner time following a strict etiquette, and at 7pm a maid will knock at your door to offer to make your bed ready for the night. Casa Velha Do Palheiro is completely furnished in an Edwardian style, and the staff follows a rigorous etiquette (they sometimes may seem a bit "stiff" and arrogant, but that's part of the game). A handful of things annoyed us though, like the door knob of the main doors which are really too low (60cm from the ground) and require guests to bend to action them. Also, one of the trays brought by room service to one of the rooms in our aisle, stayed all day long outside, which I did not find classy for a hotel of this standing (5 stars Relais et Châteaux). The hotel is also very remote, and the restaurant offer in this area is rather limited (only two evenings menus options at respectively 45 and 75, or room service à la carte). All in all, we had a rather enjoyable experience.
My wife & I have been here on 4 previous occasions & on each visit it just gets better - all because of the STAFF - if they get that right everything else in my opinion falls into place. Good varied menu , rooms clean, friendly staff. We are going back later this year to also play a round or 2 of golf so will update when we get back.
Had a fantastic stay at this hotel. Beautiful surroundings. Clean and comfortable. Delicious and varied menu. All staff were so friendly and helpful. Will definitely be going there again.

Hotel staff are brilliant,nothing is to much trouble.This is my second visit and will definitely come again. The food is lovely ,the wine is first class,especially the local Madeira house wine.the beer ain't bad either. All in all an excellent hotel to stay at.
A perfect place to relax , gardens, golf and spa plus a great dining experience with helpful staff
Beautiful gardens. Accessible by bus 36A or taxi from Funchal. Smaller than the botanic gardens with a lovely little cafe. Well worth a visit
