Stay away! I read the other reviews and didn’t want to believe how bad this place is but it’s a lot worse. These guys will change your rate upon pickup through unsolicited upgrades or insurance add-ons and you won’t even notice. As soon as you accept, you’re done. You will end up paying at least 2x for your rental that now has nothing to do with your original reservation. Also, they keep the authorization open on your credit card forever, charging you well beyond what is written on the receipt that you sign upon pickup. Cars are old and in questionable state, especially tires and brakes. Sad but true. This spoilt our entire visit to Madeira for us!

Bad car hire place. Extra charges applied with misleading explanation. Check-Out totally unprofessional with no listing of pre existing damage. Advised to take photos of car! Vehicle not cleaned very well with very dusty interior and rain stained door mirrors that made driving less safe. Be very wary accepting a car from Budget and if you agree to pay for extras (which will have been added in advance), dispute them and make them write the description of the charges so you can make a case with a third party booking company.
This rental company deserves zero stars. It took us 2 days of calling their number to get through to a representative. Their cars are badly maintained. Our car had faulty tire sensors and constantly showed the flat tire warning. After a few days, the key card stopped working, so we were locked out in the rain and couldn't reach anyone for 2 days! Terrible service.
As you can see, I gave this agency 1 star. I wish I could give zero stars, because that's what one deserves for taking money and giving no service al all. The reason for this you can read in most of the comments here. In our case, after telling us stories about how we should upgrade the car that we booked making our booking more than doubly more expensive, they asked us for our credit card's pin number. This is a scam they use in order to make money for nothing. They accept the pre payment, but because they cant book the deposit, they leave you stranded. Its a scam and I hope this dealership gets closed down soon. After this we just went to Rodvante on the opposite side of the arrival hall. They gave us a fair price for a good and well kept car, which served us very well throughout our trip. So 5 stars to Rodavante and 0 Stars for Budget.
No go!!! Very unpleasant lady working for this company ! She is not helpful at all. Not able to solve the problems. We ve got troubled with not having kreditcard and we simply didn’t get a car, which was paid!!! There are many better places you can use!
Extremely bad experience. Had a car booking at the name of my girlfriend and tried to sign in as second driver. Avis/Budget failed to assign me, failed to change booking to my name(with presence of my girlfriend), and when we said that we are willing to lose money paid for booking if we can instantly re-book the same car for the same price, they told us that if we will cancel the car will go to the “next person in queue”, and that would not be us. Basically stated, that their flawed system would prefer car staying in the parked space for 9 days than getting twice the payment and on the road with the same people that booked it earlier. We’ve rented car from different car providers, but first time experienced such nonsense. Besides that, no help on the desk, just “call this number” which doesn’t reach anyone.
Great customer service! Made a small mistake. Corrected it in no time. This is great!
This is the only time I've had a bad experience with Budget/Avis and this location deserves 0 stars for refusing to honour the booking I made through Expedia. They tried to force me into a contract at 2x the price I'd set with Expedia, and then added an additional absurdly high charge for insurance.
