the silence of the snow in summer time

The old city has been completely destroyed by events and time. But still worth to walk there and get the feeling of what Romans have been able to do....

We didn't have time to go to the actual museum on site but we saw a small part of the ruins, which were spectacular. To know that you are looking at and being a part of something that was built in the first century is an incredible feeling. The floor mosaics are beautiful and the area itself is quite accessible. We saw a small portion of the ruins as we didn't know it was such a large area. So when visiting go with a lot of time to spare and comfortable walking.

The main mission of the Conimbriga Monographic Museum is to protect and promote the Ruins and the archaeological research. The collection is exclusively composed of the archaeological materials collected in the City and the current permanent exhibition presents the objects of daily use, evokes the monumental Forum, the wealth of the domus, the strength of its commerce, the religion and beliefs of the Romanized population and the suevo-visigothic presence. Noteworthy are the mosaics preserved in situ and the 'Casa dos Repuxos', which has a mosaic paved area, important traces of mural painting and a central garden peristyle with a lake and water games. The ruins of the Roman city of Conimbriga have been known since the 16th century. In 1873, the Coimbra Institute created a Department and a Museum of Archeology and started the study of Conimbriga remains. In 1899, it carried out the first major research, designed the oppidum plant and carried out the first studies of the mosaics. After 1929, excavations began in Conimbriga, with the holding of the XI International Congress of Anthropology and Prehistory and in 1930 the State acquired the first lands. In the forties and fifties of the 20th century, works of reconstruction and consolidation of the ruins were carried out and the Monographic Museum of Conimbriga was created in 1962. — from 'patrimoniocultural.gov', slightly modified and adapted. — 3GX58Q Condeixa-a-Velha, Coimbra PORTUGAL
